#WISPAA Finalists Announced

After successfully trawling through over 600 images, the Women in Sport Photo Action Awards judges have narrowed down their best picks for the finalists of the 2023 competition.

Track and field, gymnastics, tennis and NRLW feature prominently in the bunch of professional, amateur and emerging photographer entries.

Now in its fifth year, #WISPAA aims to generate greater recognition and respect for the power and athleticism of women actively participating in sport. Women Sport Australia is delighted to be supported by News Corp as a media partner.

WSA President Gen Dohrmann said it’s incredible to see the breadth of athletes featured.

“These photographs prove that there’s space for strong, athletic, powerful women on the global stage, no matter the sport. I’m once again bowled-over by the quality of images entered.”

This year’s competition judges is headlined by award-winning Chief AFL photographer Michael Willson, Australian sportswriter and journalist Sam Lane, Co-Founder of Australian Women in Photography (AUSWIP) and Senior Director, Editorial Content at Getty Images Cassie Trotter and NewsCorp’s Head of Digital Sport Emily Benammar.

Award-winning broadcast journalist and WISPAA judge Sam Lane said these awards should be seen as a celebration of women playing and participating in the sport of their choice.

“These awards centre – and celebrate – women flexing their muscles in, and through, sport. Skill, grit, power, athleticism and joy are all writ large; freeze-framed in a collection of unforgettable images.”

News Corp will be running a People’s Choice competition, with entries open until May 29. The winners of all three categories, plus the People’s Choice winner will be announced on June 1, 2023 in Melbourne.
