Ash Barty, Sam Kerr, Tayla Harris and Lisa Da Vanna are among the leading athletes portrayed by the finalists named today in the inaugural Women in Sport Photo Action Awards – #WISPAA.
The judges had a tough job examining hundreds of dynamic entries received in the #WISPAA awards and selecting15 amateur finalists and 15 professional finalists.
One of the four judges, #WISPAA creator and Women Sport Australia communications director Louise Evans, said the standard in both amateur and professional categories was impressive.
“The images chosen to be #WISPAA finalists portray the finesse and fitness of Australia’s female athletes competing at all levels from club to the elite,” Louise Evans said. “The images chosen to be #WISPAA finalists take you beyond the gender and the sport to the core of the athlete to reveal their power, skill, athleticism and passion. They are beautiful, inspirational, gutsy images.”
Sports captured by the finalists include: AFLW, Basketball, Beach Volleyball, Gymnastics, Handball, Horse Racing, Netball, Rugby, Soccer, Surfing, Surf Lifesaving, Swimming, Tennis and Underwater Rugby.
The amateur finalists (by name state and sport) are: Marcia Riederer Vic swimming, Megan Brewer Vic AFLW, Robyn MacRae NSW Horse racing, Alexander Bogatyrev Vic gymnastics, Angelo Cabansag Vic basketball, Therese Glowaski Qld surf lifesaving, Olivier Rachon Vic beach volleyball, Stephanie Meek NSW soccer, Philip Barnes WA AFLW, David Layden Qld AFLW, Bob Wood NSW handball, May Bailey NSW netball, Johan Schmidt WA rugby, Marcia Riederer Vic underwater rugby.
The professional finalists (by name state and sport) are: Craig Golding NSW tennis, Mark Avellino Vic gymnastics, Scott Barbour, Vic soccer, Karen Watson NSW rugby, Richard Morgan NSW surfing, Marina Neil NSW rugby, Luke Hemer Vic soccer, Craig Golding NSW soccer, Andrew Berry Vic surf lifesaving; Dan Himbrechts NSW AFLW, Dan Peled Qld AFLW, Daniel Pockett Vic AFLW, Rachel Bach Vic soccer, Michael Willson Vic AFLW.
The winner of the amateur category will receive: Economy return flights, five nights accommodation and social media accreditation to attend the IAAF World Athletics Championships in Doha, Qatar 27 September – 6 October, 2019. A $A3,000 Nikon e-store voucher to spend on Nikon products.
The winner of the professional category will recieve: Economy return flights, five nights accommodation and photo media accreditation to attend the IAAF World Athletics Championships in Doha, Qatar, 27 September – 6 October, 2019. A $A5,000 Nikon e-store voucher to spend on Nikon products.
The winners will be announced on May 30.
